Who We Are
Since the early 1980s, CCLL has provided a positive recreational outlet for children ages 5-12 in the Old North End of Burlington. Each year, around 100 children practice and play baseball at the only field in their neighborhood, Roosevelt Park. The leadership of CCLL has raised thousands of dollars in the last 6 months to completely renovate the facility at Roosevelt Park. We are also seeking funds to convert the old landfill off Manhattan Drive into playing fields. All volunteers will have to pass a criminal background check to comply with national Little League requirements. We are looking for volunteers in the following areas...
Groundskeeper
Center City Little League is in the midst of a complete renovation of its field. We have installed an irrigation system and invested in thousands of dollars worth of infield clay mix to enhance the playing experience for our children. Once Spring arrives, we will rebuild the dugouts, replace the fences and construct a new storage shed. Many of the players in our league come from low-income, low-resource families who may not have the time to come to work on the field, so it is essential that we recruit volunteers from outside the league for tasks like field maintenance.
We have developed a detailed field maintenance plan and a local turf management professional will provide in-kind services to a grounds-keeper. The ideal candidate will be able to operate a riding lawn tractor, lift medium loads, and hand rake the infield. Training will be provided.
Snack Bar Manager
If you would feel a sense of satisfaction serving food and snacks to hundreds of children from the Old North End and center city neighborhoods of Burlington during Little League baseball games, this is the volunteer position for you. Duties include all aspects of managing and operating a full-service snack bar, including purchasing, cooking, stocking and handling the cash register. The retiring snack bar manager will provide training and support for the 2006 season.
Coaches and Umpires
Umping and coaching require not only a thorough knowledge of baseball, but also an ability to work with children. Our season starts with practice in April and Opening Day is on May 6. The games go for about 6-7 weeks into June. We need coaches for T-Ball, coach pitch and kid pitch levels. We plan on pairing volunteers with one or two experienced coaches. Many of these kids are Burlington’s "inner city" kids and they live for baseball. They often will show up early and want to play forever!
Coaching: There is a lot of on-the-job-training! You do need to know how to play baseball and the rules of the game. We need you to commit to these kids for the duration of the Little League season. The practices and games are Mon-Fri evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays, mornings or afternoons. We’ll have a schedule for each team by the end of April. For T-Ball level you don’t need to know as much. For coaching and umping you need to have a lot of patience with kids and their parents. Umpiring requires a very good working knowledge of the Little League rulebook. You would need to be OK’d with our head Ump.
